Khaled Hosseini discussed his novel The Kite Runner, published by Riverhead.

Hassan’s father works for Amir’s family and its part of the ethnic minority known as the Hazaras. The book explored the cultural and religious differences that divided the country and explained how the political and cultural landscape of the country has changed since then. Khaled Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, and moved to the United States in 1980. Published in 2003 by Riverhead Books, The Kite Runner is set Afghanistan during the Soviet military intervention and depicts the friendship between two young boys, Amir and Hassan. Western culture, including movies and literature, mixed with Afghan traditions, such as kite fighting in the winter. Just as he describes in The Kite Runner, Kabul was a cosmopolitan city at the time. He bonds with Baba at last but deserts Hassan when the latter is raped by Assef. Hosseini wrote about the lives of two boys growing up together in Kabul one the privileged son of a wealthy businessman, the other the son of that businessman’s servant. Khaled Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, on March 4, 1965, and was the oldest of five children.
